I ran for President of the United States last year – if you blinked you might’ve missed it, but I have no regrets. I entered the race convinced that we should go big in the problems we tackle, be bold in the solutions we offer, and do good again in the way that we govern. I left the race with the same conviction.
I traveled the nation and met people rich and poor of all races and faiths, farmers and tech workers, Democrats and Republicans and independents, but ultimately all Americans. I saw how they hunger for the promise of America, the hope for doing just a little bit better for themselves and their kids than the generation before.
I get it. It’s the dream my parents dreamed for me, the dream I dream for my two young kids. It’s the dream of the people I grew up with right here in Dublin, through tough times and boom years. It’s every American’s birthright, and it should be the mission of every elected official in Washington, D.C.
Listening and learning during the campaign refocused and refreshed me as a congressman, and I ended my candidacy even more optimistic than when I began.
The House passed a slew of bills in 2019 that could make big differences in East Bay residents’ lives, like lowering health care costs and prescription drug prices, guaranteeing women equal pay for equal work, and restoring net neutrality so you can’t be gouged online. We’ve also brought in federal grants to help reduce local traffic and transit delays, to beef up BART security, and to prepare the Bay Area for natural disasters or terrorism.
At the same time, I’ve helped hold President Donald Trump accountable for his unconstitutional actions. Impeaching the President wasn’t a decision we made lightly, and the outcome remains uncertain. But whether or not we succeed in removing this lying cheat from office, and whether our success or failure harms or helps anyone’s chances at the ballot box come November, this was the right thing to do. Better to live with the consequences of a moral necessity than to sell our souls for continued office and sell our Constitution down the river.
All of this is possible through your support, and for that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. We are all in this together, and knowing we have each others’ backs is what keeps me going day after day. Please know that I’m in Washington to fight for you.
Our nation will survive small men’s greed for power, careless cruelty, and disdain for the rule of law. The rest of us – we big, bold, good Americans who share dreams for our kids’ brighter futures, along with a clear sense of right and wrong – will rise up to reclaim our White House and Capitol.
Because when all is said and done, America’s most basic nature is to rise up, surmount our obstacles, and continue to form a more perfect union. It’s in our bones, and in 2020, we should believe it’s in our stars.
